Circles!!

Who would of thought something so simple would give me the most trouble!??? I have spent the last 8 weeks coming back to circles on and off. I had the worst time trying to get this right. Here is what I learned:

Background needed to be on transparent. Every time I would copy my quarters, I could not move them without the white background messing things up!

Make more lines if needed. Once I made my rows, I figured out (the hard way) that adding a few on the end won't hurt. This way when I tried to color them, the fill wouldn't cover my whole page.

Delete the background!!!! That kept getting in the way! So in order for me to move things around to "lock" together, delete that background.

Most importantly I learned that as much as I would like to think, "I've got this down", I don't. I think it was important to pace myself and come back to this project. As much as it frustrated me, I am proud I was able to come back and figure out where I was going wrong! Good Luck Everyone!!! Hope you all had as much fun as I did!!

These are my 2 favorites from project 13. I could create these all night. I like playing with the color schemes. This is my last post. The Celtic knots were very challenging for me. I wanted to do different designs besides circles and could not figure out what to use. It took me for ever to create the half circle knot. I don't think the Olympic circles have anything to do with Celtic knots, however, they are the only things I could think of that linked together like them.

This project was pretty neat. I got to make many designs and one even looked like an envelope. I liked this better than the random projects because I came up with the design and colors before I started putting them into the computer and I like how they came out. Wow...it took my brain a few days to grasp this one! The over/under really got me! But I realized that layer placement is KEY! You really can't be too random with this one. I liked the challenge and when I got it, started to enjoy creating more knots!

I enjoyed working on these projects! I like creating clean and simple work and this project definitely allows you to do that. I also tried another project with a black background, that was cool! Being able to work color and filters is what I liked best about #13! Okay-last day to get those circles down....yah I know....still working on quarter circles. :-/

I finally got this. Not my best work but I got through it. This letterfrom project was definitly not my forte. Everyone posted such great work. I have thoroughly enjoyed sharing this journey with everyone in this class. Thanks for the suggestions, support, and wonderful words of encouragement. It was my first on-line class and first time "blogging" and it has been a pleasure. Thank you Jerry for teaching me so much.

Project 13: Proportion

Well class... Alas this will be my our final posts. I'm a little saddened because I have had a great time during this MOD learning from you all and going back to basics due to Jerry's instruction. I thought the syllabus was EXCELLENT. The projects really challenged me to keep this simple and push further into areas that I had not explored before. Jerry, thank you for bringing this course full circle. Our last project was a great one; a perfect ending to the story of form!

I will finally be finishing my degree this MOD (a few more days to go... WOO HOO)! I thank everyone for making this class a wonderful experience. Check out fotothing for my final posts. Don't forget to find art in the simple things. And as I close all my emails, "Life is what's happening right now. What are you creating?"... a masterpiece I hope! :)

I'm very sad that this class is almost over. I'm just getting started! I started this class with great trepidation. I was afraid that I wouldn't be creative enough, or talented enough to do well. I enjoyed creating the forms and balance with this project. Very symbolic and relaxed atmosphere when viewing. These allow the subjectivity of ones mine to focus on the imagination and vision of realism.

I really enjoyed this project! I liked working with different fonts and gradient shades. It took me a little while to "see" what I wanted to do because I tried to tie the colors into the letters. This was my favorite piece!

This was a really fun project!!! I truly enjoyed working with the light and shadows on this. I liked being able to control where the light was coming from and how the shadows were represented. Much of what frustrates me in photography is not always being able to control your light source, but this project I was in full control! Loved it!

Project 12: Celtic knot

I'm thrilled that we had this assignment. I always wondered about the making (digitally) of the knots. I love the unity and togetherness that they symbolize. I tried to experiment a little with this project. I have uploaded one of those experiments. :) I hope you like it. I created it with the letter "e". It was difficult to get the over/under pattern correct. So what you see is the outcome of my efforts. Enjoy.

Project 11: More Forms with Type

Well, once I downloaded the free trial for CS4, I was on my way. I've been using PS Elements, which I have already loaded on my computer, but I couldn't figure out how to complete the project with my current software. So once, I started creating some images, I really had a good time. I've decided to share one piece that I took a step further than what was asked, but included all that we've done in prior projects. Okay, this took me a little longer than I thought it would. It took me a little while to get these to look right. I didn't like this project as much as some of the others but I can appreciate the lesson of the project, the light, the shadows, and darkness and how it's supposed to work together. It made me appreciate how hard it is to make some of the photoshop pictures I've seen.

Project 10: Gradient

This project was a challege for me. I was able to get the circles to look 3-d and was able to put the lens effect on my pieces, but that's it. I wasn't able to do much more than that. I'm sure it was because I didn't know where to go. I saw some of the other pieces for this project and liked the transparency effect that was used. I wasn't sure how to do that. I think some one of my pieces (in particular) could have benefitted from that effect. Please give me some tips on how to achieve that. I would love to try.

I have photoshop elements 8 so I did not have the path tool. Instead I used the warp tool, and experimented with some great gradations. I like these images the best. Others are on fotothing.

Project 9: Cropping (Argyle Socks!)

I REALLY enjoyed this project. After watching Jerry's video and hearing his mention of ironwork, I was officially inspired. When creating my pieces I began thinking of not only ironwork, but funky socks, and African cloth. I thought how amazing it would be to actually turn someof these designs into those things. What a great job, if there is one!

All of my pieces have color. I looked at inverting them, but that option just seemed to take away from the design. It's amzing how something so simple can be turned into something just the opposite. This class is really driving that concept home.

Project 8: 1/4 Circle

This project was a little challenging at first. My first try, I had way too many gaps. I had so many I couldn't fill them all. So, I saved that one and started a new one. The next couple I tried some different patterns. They came out okay. Just a little tip for anyone who hasn't done this project--when creating your circle, make sure that you get it as close to the edge of the canvas as possible. The closer the circle is, the less gaps you'll have to fill. I learned the hard way!

Light & Shadow

This one was challenging! It took me some time to get the hang of this. I'm using Gimp now and the features are similar to Photoshop but the effects of them are different. So, I did the standard shots to get used to how to light the spheres and where to put the light and the shadow. After that, I let myself have fun. I think that this is kind of like that previous cropped letter project we did before but bolder so it made for a better design. I also think the repetition of it gave me a better eye for what I wanted to crop and how it would come out. Here is the example I used and the completed ones.

Again, this was a fun project. I'm a pro at rotating and flipping now! I croppped the original picture, which was a tree, and used only the top branches. I'm not too thrilled about how it came out, but I like the colors. I would have included another piece to share; however, I had continual problems uploading it. Hopefully I can post it to fotothing.

Hi Everyone, this is outcome of my cropped letterform project. I chose the letter P and had a lot of fun incorporating the different filters as well as learning to use the new fx function. I loved the S crop Jerry did and tried to find something that would give me something similar but couldn't. Oh well, I do like how these came out.

Project 10 provided me with a challenge. Or it could be the fact that I have been working on my computer for hours now too! This is my last project for the today. I was trying to create this vision I had in my head and could not accomplish it. It worked much better for me when I just went with the flow and did a little of this and that. I love the cloud effect. I also liked towards the end when I experimented with color. Till next time.

Project 9... here it is. I have taken my first letter of my name ... letter P and rotated it, copied it, colored it, and finally added some effects to it. My 4 pieces include the beginning print, then the copied print, then the colored print with a stained glass effect and finally, I selected the whole thing and put another effect called, glass I believe. Not positive on that one. I really like the way it came out.

Project 8 went rather smoothly, although it took me a while to find my creative style. I finally decided to go with this set up. I call it "school of orcas" because that is what I see when I look at it. I wasn't trying to make orcas, they just came to me. I love it!

I did three variations of project 7 . A tree, lightning, and a wave, which was my favorite. Like Jerry said I am starting to get the hang of copying and pasting, and making canvas sizes much easier now. I am even getting the hang of rotating a little better. I didn't realize we should be doing 2 projects a week until this weekend so I have been playing catch up a little. I have one more to go... project 8 to get on track.

This is my positive and negative space project. Since I am using Photoshop Element 8 it took me a while to find the tools that Jerry uses in the ps4 program. They are not called the same. Thank god for the help menu. I would have liked to boarder the negative space one and the 50-50 but I could not figure out how to do that in my program. I like my smiling man much better than the letters. I hope this was okay to change it up a little.

I ran into a few issues with letters like G and F simply because there wasn't too much to work with. But other than that, I thought everything came out quite well!

I had a few slight issues with this project at first but nothing major! After a few tries I was able to figure out how to alternate the inversion on each square (by NOT flattening it first!) I went out of order with my projects this week because the "half circle's" project has proven to become very challenging for me. I am not sure why this concept is not clicking with my brain, but as soon as it does, I will post those.

This one was fun also. We got to build on everything we've learned so far. I did two different letters but like one better. I think the crop I did on the B was bigger than it was supposed to be. I had trouble with cropping but I got it on the second. I liked rotating it to see what it came out like. The pattern that came out was really interesting and the filters completed the look!

This was real fun! Once I got started, I really got the hang of rotating the letters and finding interesting patterns. Though I really wanted to add some color, I tried to stay black and white. The filters that I used on the piece that I chose to share on the blog is my favorite feature. Instead of using capital letters, I used lowercase "i's". I LOVE how this came out. I would like to apologize to everyone in class for my delay in posting this project. I have spent the last couple weeks fighting, first, with Gimp and, more recently, with PS. Then my PC was apparently getting in the way of PS running properly- I know you must all be shocked the pc is giving me problems!-lol- anyway- although I am not in love with the results- this is the first finished product I made for project 2. I enjoyed this one, after snapping some of the cuts together this creation remines me of the early Ancient Egyptians era. Taking a close look at the pic you can see the image of the soldiers standing guard over the tombs near the pyramids.

Fun! Fun! Fun! I loved this project and I liked changing it up. I started with the Z and I inverted the position so that I have images with it upright and upside down which gave me two different looks to start with.

When I added the second layer you really got to see how different the patterns were from eachother.

Then I inverted and added some color! I have to wait until tomorrow to upload the rest of these to fotothing but I wanted to get these up so I don't fall behind. Fun! Fun! Fun!

Project 4- Mirror Images

I added a little color, because of thought, "Why not?" I was inspired by the other posts whose designs were really great that I knew I had to do something different to stand out (in a good way, I hope). Did I? Let me know. :)

This was an interesting twist (addition) to what we learned last week. It's pretty interesting how you can twist one piece in a different direction and come up with a whole new pattern. This one wasn't as bad as I thought it would be becuase it built upon what what have already learned. I like the way the inverted black and white mirrored pieces came out. I posted one that was normal and the same one inverted. They came out pretty neat.

I like the way these came out - especially the negative / positive images. I actually love them the best so far.

I'm definitely not creative and that is why I took this class - to push myself. This is definitely giving me an outlet to have fun with creative projects.

Here is week 4 Mirrored Tiles. I like the tile with the 4 mirrored images, but when I get into tiles of 9-12 I don't like how the image changes. It could be my mix of circles selected, but I don't like the arrangement very much.

I did my projects last week and then came back for "mirrors" and found myself back to the Week Two video for a refresher. I like the way this particular picture came out. I was able to have some fun with this project since we didn't stray too far from last week's assignment. This first piece is what I started with and chose all the snapshots from.

This second one had me laughing for good long time because I realized after I was finished that it looked like human anatomy :)

These last three are my favorite - I started playing with the rotating the image to make different lines and such - they came out pretty cool.

I really liked this project. It was a lot of fun seeing what you ended up with. I created two Choas pictures and then did a lot of canvas collages. I think the final product got better the more I did. I developed an eye for what I would find more interesting as a collage when I cut the first pattern. The top image is my original composition of dots. Then I have my 16 block image. This took me a long time to create. I kept having trouble with the copying and pasting. Sound easy enough but I kept loosing the color in the dots. They were pasting clear? It drove me crazy. I must have watched Jerry's video 10 times. Finally I would watch his video for 5 seconds stop it and do that part, then continue on for 5 more seconds and do that part. It was very tedious but it worked. I see a little Scottie dog in my dots, what do you see?

Project 2- More Dots

In my vigor to begin the "Grid" project I completely skipped over my post for the REAL project 2. I created a random piece and broke it up into several smaller pieces. The one that I posted, I like. It was a little difficult for me to honestly see the beauty in the smaller pieces, but it reminded me of an assignment I did with fractals and I was able to at least appreciate the simplicity of it. In my attempts to create these elaborate masterpieces, I sometimes fail to appreciate the simple and basic structures that allowed me to develop that wonderful piece in the first place. Sometimes we have to go back to basics... and that's not a bad thing. Enjoy my others on fotothing.

Ithink this was a cool exercise. Normally, I'm feel unsure about being creative and maybe missing the boat. The random aspect of the assignment made it tons of fun.

This was a cool project. I'd never worked with this technique in Photoshop, so it was something new. I wanted to try to create a less random design, but figured that this week was all about the "random". So, I went with it. In the piece that I chose to share I have rotated the first block I started with, then repeated the pattern that the first 2 blocks gave me. I like how it turned out. I hope you like it too. I have posted others to my fotothing account. I have also posted a dots piece that was random but did not have the repetition that my others did. Check it out!

I couldn't get Photoshop CS4 or Elements downloaded but I got some help from my friends who were able to download it on their computer and let me use it. I've posted the two I liked the best. Hi Everyone, I think I missed the mark with the last two I did (antic & morphic). Maybe antic and stoic would have been better. I created two more that I thought went better together. I love what everyone did with their project. It's amazing how many labels we can apply to a black dot and have it make sense because of its placement and size!
